Paddles Up! NLCC Achilles Launches Summer Canoeing Program
The summer season is officially underway for NLCC Achilles! On Tuesday, June 24th, our cadets traded the parade square for the shoreline as we kicked off our highly anticipated summer canoeing program at Guelph Lake.
The evening began with a tour of the property and an essential safety briefing, ensuring all cadets understand site rules and how to behave responsibly while on location. Safety is always our top priority, especially when operating on the water.
Learning the Ropes (and Strokes)
Under the expert guidance of Lt(NL) Clifford, the cadets were introduced to the foundational paddle strokes they will be mastering and practicing over the coming weeks. From steering to generating power, these skills will give them the confidence they need to captain their own vessels.
Of course, no canoeing program starts without ensuring everyone is safe in the water. The evening wrapped up with a quick dip in the cool, refreshing waters of Guelph Lake as the cadets completed their mandatory swim tests.
Looking Ahead
As the summer progresses, the cadets will spend their Tuesday evenings enjoying the lake, learning how to control their canoes, and maneuvering through various challenges under the close supervision of our dedicated Staff and Volunteers.
We are looking forward to a fantastic, sun-filled summer of teamwork, skill-building, and fun on the water. See everyone at the lake!
Parents and guardians are reminded to ensure cadets arrive with proper footwear (water shoes or old running shoes), a towel, sunscreen, and plenty of water!
