While the officers and instructors handle the direct, Friday-night training and leadership of the cadets, the Navy League of Canada – Guelph Branch acts as the crucial "backbone" operating entirely behind the scenes.
Because Navy League Cadet Corps (like NLCC Achilles, for ages 9–12) do not receive funding from the Department of National Defence, they rely 100% on the Navy League of Canada and its local branches to exist.
The Guelph Branch directly supports NLCC Achilles through several critical functions:
- Financial Backing & Local Fundraising
The Guelph Branch is responsible for keeping the program free or highly affordable for local families. They organize, oversee, and manage all major fundraising initiatives—such as the tag days and community raffle ticket draws you see throughout the year. They manage the corps' budget to ensure there are funds for trips, camping, canoeing, and special recreation nights.
- Facilities and Infrastructure
The Branch is responsible for providing and maintaining a safe place for the cadets to train. In Guelph, this means managing the "ship" (the facility) located at 75 Cardigan Street, ensuring the building is maintained, insured, and equipped for Friday night parades and weekday optional training.
- Uniforms and Equipment
The Guelph Branch coordinates and funds the procurement of cadet uniforms, ensuring every child is properly outfitted with naval-pattern uniforms, badges, and ball caps at no cost to the family. They also help supply the specialized gear needed for band, drill, seamanship, and sports nights.
- Community Liaison & Public Relations
The Branch acts as the official bridge between NLCC Achilles and the city of Guelph. They handle public relations, coordinate recruitment drives, and secure invitations for the cadets to participate in civic events, such as the local Decoration Day service with the Royal Canadian Legion or community parades.
- Recruiting and Screening Adult Volunteers
To keep the cadets safe, the Branch manages the administrative onboarding of adult volunteers. This includes executing strict background checks, processing Vulnerable Sector Screenings (VSS), and ensuring that all Navy League Officers and Instructors are properly vetted and supported.
In short: The officers of NLCC Achilles command the "ship" and train the cadets, but the Guelph Branch builds the ship, pays for the fuel, and ensures it has a safe harbor to return to.
